Amanda Elkins Photography bio picture

From the perspective of a client

"A portrait should be more than a passport photo. It needs a backdrop, an expression, a movement, and, in my opinion at least a little bit of natural light. Maybe even a dewdrop or a splinter. When by happenstance I found Amanda, I stumbled onto a visual biographer, someone who could capture the character within us, place it in time and space, and make it a memory.

"Unlike most of us who can detect a Kodak moment but not capture it, Amanda has fine-tuned her professional skills to bring it all together in a single frame. Perhaps it was her knowledge of being the subject that gave her an intuitive sense of what to look for.

"Amanda came into photography honestly, first as a model in Brazil, then as a parent trying to capture her own son's poignant moments. As a model, Amanda discovered the art of environment. As a parent, she learned to tune in to the emotion within a subject. Unlike studio photography where poses seem forced and smiles unnatural, Amanda's pictures reflect the nature of her subjects whether they capture an intimate moment between newlyweds or the fleeting sense of excitement in a toddler.

"Without a doubt, her Brazilian heritage emerges in the colors she captures with her camera. One wonders why we fill our frames with black and whites and sepia tones when there is such vibrancy in the things we take for granted everyday: an old straw broom, a loved leather chair, even the fringe of a much abused rug. I used to be a fan of sepia-toned family shots until I saw Amanda's work. Now they fade into a sea of lost faces compared to the rich intensity of Amanda's prints. Besides bringing life and vibrancy into the expression of the subject, Amanda sense of light and color also captures the subtle nature of distressed wood or rusted steel in the background. I had no idea how much energy a picture could possess. I caught glimpses of my son possessively reaching for his favorite toy, of my husband smirking from the corner of his eye, and of me delighting in a single moment of being a novice mom.

"A picture has a hundred reasons for being taken; to share with friends, to remember for when we are older, to reveal to our children when they ask about themselves. Amanda's pictures capture the weight of a newborn's head on his mom's shoulder, the delighted smile of a toddler jumping in the air, even the tenderness of a couple's hands touching. She finds these moments, as unique as they are to the individuals she is photographing. Each time I revisit pictures Amanda has taken I see something new, something that brings me into that moment even if I wasn't there to begin with."

I was tagged!

I was tagged by the Fantastic Canadian photographer Kerianne Brown. I really don’t know what to say besides thank you for the sweet words about my work. It has taken me so looong to be able to get to this post, but I have been looking forward to it. I *secretly* admit that everyday I’d think of something to add as one of the 5 interesting things about me, because truth be told I am not that interesting AT ALL.

I love to stalk  read Kerianne’s blog. I’d love to go visit her one day and check out those AMAZING locations she shoots at. Her newborn pictures are my absolute favorite!!! I think it’s so great when you look at a photographer’s work and you can tell how much they just love what they do.  She once shot this bridal session that REALLY made me fall in love with her work and become a fan. I mean… I’d hire her to shoot my wedding if I was to marry again. HA! Maybe when we renew our vowels in Brazil for our 10 year anniversary!

Ok, so now for the rules:

  • Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog
  • Share 5 things about yourself that others might not know
  • List 5 random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs
  • Let each person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs

So, for my *intereting* things (I will stay away from business related topics):

1. I was born and raised in Brazil. I only moved to United States when I was 18 as an international student at SBCC. Prior to moving here I did not speak english. AT ALL!

2. I don’t eat vegetables. Hate them! I only recently, as of last june, started eating a salad (well… lettuce, croutons and italian dressing). I do cook using veggies, but never eat the veggies, unless they are blended and I cannot see ANY of them. I love using Cilantro when I cook.

3. It takes me a WHILE to fall asleep. My mind never wants to shut off! I need the baby monitor by my side even though her room is right next door. I check on both my kids at least a couple of times each night. I know… I am weird!

4. My husband is fluent in portuguese as well. He studied it when he attended UCSB. I am so proud of him for learning it BEAUTIFULY in 2 years only. It’s awesome that he is able to communicate with my family now because the very firts time he went to Brazil it was kind of interesting. haha :)

5. I am a super easy person! I don’t require a lot to be happy. Not just regular happy…very happy. My parents were amazing at showing my sisters and I to value everything we have. They taught us to be caring and thankful and appreciative of everything. I hope that I am able to show that to my own kids.

Boring huh? It is hard picking only 5 out of so many great friends and amazing talents I’ve come to know since I started my photography journey. But, I am tagging 5 awesome photographers who I’ve come to know well  and who’s work I trully admire. Leah Profancik who is my buddy! We spend sooo many hours chatting and laughing and talking shop. I think she is so talented and such a sweetheart! Mariah Gale and I also spend long hours chating… and sharing “secrets”. She is incredibly gifted in her art. Her composition and lighting are simply perfection!  Shannon Stewart is a California friend and such a nice and fun person to be around. Her daughter Madison is such a supermodel!! Her photography is captivating! Brenda Acuncius‘ work is a delight! Her daughter and my son are promised to each other. One day we will meet in person and photograph the cute couple together! LOL Last but not least, someone who are far more talented than she knows and who’s work so rocks the house! Fara Smith everyone!!! Be SURE to check out her outstanding work!

Well…I think this is it!

Check out their blogs to learn about their 5 interesting things. I sure can’t wait!
